Q: What is Flesh & Blood Everything Balm made out of?

A: It's made out of three ingredients: tallow, organic extra virgin olive oil and organic Bulgarian lavender oil.

Q: What is tallow?

A: Tallow is derived from suet, which is animal fat. I source the suet from a sustainable supplier called US Wellness Meats, a series of farms that raise their cows on a grass diet, in a stress-free environment. (Really. They monitor their beef's adrenaline damage to ensure they're happy!) 

Q: Why did you decide to make it?

A: So many reasons. I was really inspired by the Native American way of life, in which they used every part of the buffalo. It was also a reaction to how divided we are from our food and the materials we consume. It was born out of the desire to decrease the carbon footprint of meat-eaters like myself, and to question the efficacy of vegan "organic" skincare, which is often created using extremely diluted materials that create more and more waste. I have nothing against being vegan, but as I choose to eat meat, I feel the responsibility to use the byproducts of the process that would otherwise be thrown away. Also, tallow is REALLY good for your skin!

Q: How is it made? 

A: I slow-cook the suet, turning it into tallow by filtering the liquid at least six times using ultra-fine colanders and cheese cloth. I then mix the tallow with insanely awesome organic extra virgin olive oil (I chose the brand because it's first-pressed, hand-picked, milled with a stone wheel within 48 hours of harvesting, pressed with a hydraulic press in California, is pesticide-free and packaged in a dark glass bottle to protect from oxidation), and organic Bulgarian lavender oil. After cooling for a few hours, I pipe the product into glass jars. Aside from the pastry bag - once cooled - the product does not touch plastic. 

Q: What does it smell like?

A: Absolutely heavenly lavender, with maybe a hint of salt. I made many, many batches of product before settling on the perfect amount of each ingredient for both the end result of the product, as well as the scent. 

Q: Where can we use it?

A: Everywhere! I use it around my eyes, it's so gentle. I've even used it on fresh tattoos.

Q: Is it tested on animals?

A: Just the human ones. As it's made from animals and all organic materials, it would never "need" to be! It HAS, however, been extensively tested on my friends and family who are now avid users.
